Good news out of Cooperstown, N.Y.: MLB is on the verge of expanding instant replay that would allow managers two challenges in the first six innings and one challenge from the seventh inning on beginning next season. The owners, players and umpires must agree to the new format, but getting blown calls corrected are good for everyone.

You have to wonder if Mark Emmert wishes he would have remained at the University of Washington as its president. This whole NCAA mess regarding Texas A&M QB Johnny Manziel must be keeping Emmert awake at night.

It is really cool that the undefeated Dolphins of 1972 will be honored at the White House  next Tuesday, but one key member of head coach Don Shula’s coaching staff will be missing. That is offensive line coach Monte Clark, who passed away a few years ago. The former 49ers and Lions head coach had a heart the size of Texas.

Mike Trout is one of the most talented young players in the Major Leagues, and he’s also one of the most intelligent. The Angels’ second-year outfielder scored some points with fans all over the country on Monday when he said during an interview with WFAN in New York: “To me, personally, I think you should be out of the game if you get caught (using PEDs).” He was talking in general terms, but surely had Alex Rodriguez in mind.
