Total Consciousness: U.S. Open finale

7:15 p.m. Sunday: Dustin Johnson 3-putted from 12 feet, four inches on the 18th hole to give Jordan Spieth the U.S. Open championship.  JS

7:06 p.m. Sunday: Spieth birdies No. 18 for 1-shot lead, but Johnson lurks behind. An eagle wins for DJ, a birdie ties for first and there would  be an 18-hole playoff on Monday. JS

6:56 p.m. Sunday: Spieth smacks fairway rescue club to within a few feet of an eagle on the par-5 18th. JS 6:50 p.m. Sunday: Spieth misses 3-footer for bogey to fall into tie with Louis Oosthuizen, who covered the back nine in 29 shots. JS

6:40 p.m. Sunday: An errant tee shot at No. 17 threatens to cut into some of Spieth’s 3-shot lead. JS

6:28 p.m. Sunday: Branden Grace, tied for the lead going into the 16th hole, hit his drive OB, under the fence separating fans from the train tracks, costing him two shots. He can probably kiss the Open title chances goodbye. JS

6:23 Sunday: Louis Oosthuizen  is making a charge. Five consecutive birdies from 12 through 16 has moved him to within two shots of the lead. JS.

5:45 p.m. Sunday: Charl Schwartzel birdies No. 18 to complete the back side in 31 and final round 66, but his overall 2-under  won’t get it done. JS

5:43 pm Sunday: Within three holes, DJ goes from a 2-stroke lead to one behind Spieth and Grace. BS

5:24 pm Sunday: Spieth and Grace both barely miss birdie putts on 11. One behind, both. – BS

5:21 pm Sunday: DJ misses his 14-footer, bogey. He leads by one. Day also bogeys, trailing by three still. But the leaders are tight. – BS

5:16 pm Sunday: DJ may have a 2-shot lead on everyone at the turn but he’s in trouble on the 10th, into the gallery and rough. We’ll see. – BS

5:05 pm Sunday: Day missed a 5-foot bird attempt on nine, stays 3-under, three behind his playing partner DJ. – BS

4:47 pm Sunday: Near the turn, DJ has a two-stroke lead over Spieth and Grace. Day is fading, three back. – BS

3:40 pm Sunday: Don’t believe it. Rory misses. That could be the end. He’s running out of holes. BS

3:36 pm Sunday: More loud cheers for Rory – and the leaders are not far away – as he hits his approach within six feet on 14. A birdie would bring him within one shot of the leaders. Believe it. – BS

3:33 pm Sunday: Both DJ and Day miss short birdie putts on two. They are still tied with Grace, all at -4. Spieth is -3.

3:30 pm Sunday: Rory is on fire. He makes a 30-footer on 13 to go 6-under for the day – best round of the tournament thus far – to go -2 overall. The crowd noise echoes through the hills are over to the leaders. – BS

3:04 pm Sunday: Spieth bogeys first hole, already behind by one. – BS 2

:56 pm Sunday: Tom O’Toole, president of the USGA, tells Jason Day before he tees off, “‘see me if  you need me.” –  BS

2:49 pm Sunday: Jordan Spieth and Branden Grace have teed off. Spieth is in the rough on the left. Only one group left, the leaders Jason Day and Dustin Johnson. — BS

2:07 p, Sunday: Billy Horschel, one of the more animated players mimicking the gyrations of the green, finished at 3-under, best round of the day. – BS

1:17 pm Sunday: An indication that the course may be quite a bit easier came when Morgan Hoffman checked out with a 4-under 66. – BS

1:11 pm Sunday: Lee Westwood is one of the nice guys on the Tour but he is European (English). And that means he’ll be chirping about the course. After finishing his round at 9-over-par, he was asked what his impressions were of Chambers Bay. “It’s the kind of course I would like to come play with my mates with a cart and a few beers.” He added that it’s not a U.S. Open layout. – BS

1:06 pm Sunday: Phil is done and gone. A gaggle of reporters waited in a designated area for him but we spotter Bones, his caddy, driving to a spot where we think Phil got it. And he drove away, 13-under. – BS

12:32 pm Sunday: Phil Mickelson, finishing his round, total wiffed on his short wedge. He completed swung under it and didn’t make contact. He finished 3-over for the day and 13-over for the tournament, tied for 69th place at this point. – BS

12:15 pm Sunday: No. 18 will play as a par-5 today. That decision was made by the USGA officials because the wind is out of the north. The long hitters will have a big advantage because the pin was way back and against a backboard. That could be an exciting hole, not a stupid one. – BS

11:01 am Sunday: Chris Kirk, who started at 9-over this morning, took a 10 – TEN – on the first hole. He’s now 19-over. – BS

10:56 am Sunday: According to Golf Channel, doctors visited Jason Day at his on-campus motorhome. They did a ‘procedure’ and said he has been cleared to play. It’s now up to Jason to decide whether he’s ready. – BS

10:43 Sunday: Just noticed that No. 18 is a par 5 for the final round and am wondering if the USGA succumbed to all of the complaints, specifically co-leader Jordan Spieth. The 21-year-old grumbled about No. 18 playing as a par 4 during Friday’s round, calling it the “dumbest” hole he had played in his life. The game plan, we think, was to alternate No. 18 and No. 1 as par 4 and par 5 in each of the rounds. No. 18 would have been a par 4 for the final round. – Jim Street

10:30 am Sunday: Up and running on the final day of the 115th U.S. Open at Chambers Bay. Rory and Phil are on the course but not on course. They are destined to finish among the also-rans, well back. We’re still 4 1-2 hours away from the two leaders, Jordan Spieth and Jason Day, teeing off. Long road home. — Bob Sherwin
