What it’ll take to advance to Atlanta

The FedExCup Playoffs have been reduced to the top 70 going into this week’s BMW Championship. By Sunday night, another 40 players will be eliminated, with the top 30 in points advancing to the TOUR Championship, where the FedExCup champion will be decided.

Keeping in mind that points are quadrupled for the first two Playoffs events, the latest projections indicate that between 1,280 to 1,365 points will be needed to reach East Lake. Those projections are based on historical data and current season trends.

,;Using 1,280 as the threshold, 22 players are above that number, from No. 1 Brooks Koepka (2,980) to No. 22 Brandt Snedeker (1,289). Since nothing is guaranteed, those 22 players are considered “likely” to advance.

If the projections hold, that leaves 48 players chasing eight spots at the BMW Championship — including two-time FedExCup champ Tiger Woods, who won the TOUR Championship last year under the previous format. Woods is currently 38th in points and is projected to need a solo 11th finish this week to advance.

Here’s a look at those 48 players in this week’s field who have yet to reach that projected threshhold and what it will likely take to secure a top-30 spot. (Again, these are just projections and not definitive projections.)
