Langer favored (again) in Schwab Cup

The 72-man field is set for this week’s Dominion Energy Charity Classic, the first of three Charles Schwab Cup Playoff events.

It will be followed by the PowerShares QQQ Championship, where the field will be cut to 54, and the final event on the schedule, the Charles Schwab Cup Championship, at Phoenix Country Club, November 10-12. The top 36 after PowerShares will advance to Phoenix in the season-long quest of the Charles Schwab Cup.

Scott McCarron made a 10-foot birdie putt on the first playoff hole to defeat Tom Byrum last year at the inaugural Dominion Energy Charity Classic. With the victory, McCarron moved into second place in the standings for the Charles Schwab Cup. He shot 13-under-par 203. This year, McCarron enters the event as No. 2 in the race behind three-time winner Bernhard Langer.

McCarron dominated the par 5 holes, making birdies on nine of 15, including the playoff hole. Kevin Sutherland and Brandt Jobe tied for third at The Country Club of Virginia (James River course).

RANK PLAYER COMMENT
1 Bernhard Langer Bernhard Langer

He begins the playoffs entrenched as No. 1 in the Charles Schwab Cup points race but the list of pursuers has grown in recent weeks and he will be tested in the final three events. Still, the dominant force and his resolve is impeccable.

Now solidly positioned at No. 3 in points race with his T8 finish at SAS Championship despite injury woes. He’d love to add a second Charles Schwab Cup to his resume. The first came in 2013 at Harding Park.
