Chappell burns up back nine with 29

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Kevin Chappell started Friday on the 10th tee and proceeded to tie the TPC Southwind course record for low back nine with a 29. On the day, Chappell shot a 6-under 64 and is 5 under through two rounds at the FedEx St. Jude Classic.

Six others players have shot a 29 on the back nine here, the most recent before Friday being Lee Westwood in the first round of the 2010 tournament that he eventually won.

Six of Chappell’s seven birdies Friday came on the back nine (the first nine holes he played) and he strung together four straight on holes 13-16. He hit 79 percent of his fairways through the first two rounds and hit 88 percent of his greens in regulation.

After struggling at the Memorial Tournament presented by Nationwide last week when he tied for 49th place, Chappell said he “found something” while playing in the U.S. Open qualifier before coming to Memphis.

“Really felt confident with my ball striking, wanted to see a few putts go in,” Chappell said. “Yesterday it didn’t happen. Stayed patient, feel like my attitude is great and, you know, the patience paid off.”
