Hearn in group that earns Open spots

WHITE SULPHUR SPRINGS, W.Va. — David Hearn didn’t win the Greenbrier Classic playoff Sunday, but he did come away with a spot in the upcoming 144th Open Championship.

The Canadian, playoff winner Danny Lee, James Hahn and Greg Owen all earned spots in the field at St. Andrews.

“I’ve been a pro for a long time, and to get into majors like this doesn’t happen as much as you might think,” Hearn said. “For top-tier players it seems to happen a lot, but for guys like myself, sort of plugging along, this is an amazing opportunity for me to get to St. Andrews. That was one of my top goals in the next two weeks, so I’m real happy that I took care of it this week. I get to make a little bit of an early arrangement to get over there. I’m super excited about it. I’m going to be pinching myself the whole week.”

Earlier in the day at the Alstom Open de France, James Morrison, Jaco Van Zyl and Rafa Cabrera Bello punched their tickets to the year’s third major.

At the Greenbrier Classic, the top four players finishing inside the top 12 who weren’t already eligible earned a place at the Open Championship. In France, three places were on offer.

Next week, there will be one spot available at the John Deere Classic on the PGA Tour for a player in the top five and ties who isn’t already in the Open Championship field. Three spots will be up for grabs at the European Tour’s Scottish Open for golfers in the top 10 and ties.

The Open Championship begins July 16 in Fife, Scotland.
