Carner headlines Seattle Legends event

SEATTLE — The Legends Tour, featuring Hall of Fame and prominent LPGA women 45 and older – has announced its 30-player tournament field for next month’s inaugural event at the Suquamish Clearwater Legends Cup, at White Horse Golf Club June 8-10.

The field is highlighted by Hall of Famer JoAnne Carner (pictured), who grew up in Seattle and became of the LPGA’s greatest players. Others include HOF Pat Bradley, Betsy King, Jane Blalock and Hollis Stacy, as well as numerous former LPGA tournament winners, including past champions of the former Safeco Classic.

“It was always my favorite time of the season on the LPGA Tour when we played in the Pacific Northwest,” said Nancy Scranton, winner of the last Legends Tour tournament staged in Washington in 2013, outside Kirkland. “I won my first LPGA tournament in Vancouver, so I have very fond memories of the area.

“I won my 29th LPGA tournament just outside of Kent, Wa, and at that time it was another step closer to earning Hall of Fame status,” added Bradley, winner of the 1991 Safeco Classic. “It’s a beautiful area and I’m really looking forward to this event.”

In addition to Bradley, past Safeco Classic champions in the field will include Carner (1985), Australian Jan Stephenson (1987) and Californian Brandie Burton (1993).

Four-time LPGA Tour winner Wendy Ward, who resides in Edwall, Wash., will make her Legends Tour debut at the event.

Other players in the field with multiple Legends Tour wins will include: Rosie Jones of South Carolina (seven); Florida’s Scranton (five); Canadian Lorie Kane (four); Laurie Rinker of Florida (four); and Sweden’s Liselotte Neumann (three).

At least a dozen former Solheim Cup Team members for both the United States and Europe will be represented in the field, including Neumann and England’s Trish Johnson of the European side, as well as California’s Pat Hurst and Minnesotan Michele Redman of Team USA.

The tournament pro-am is set for an 11 a.m. shotgun start on Friday, June 8, followed by the 36-hole professional competition on Saturday and Sunday, June 9-10, with tee times starting at 10 a.m. each day.

The field will compete for a purse of $175,000, with the winner taking home $25,000.
