PULLMAN, Wa. – The Stanford Cardinal successfully defended its Pac-12 Men’s Golf Championship on Wednesday, firing a collective closing round 340, creating a 14-shot gap between first and second places in the third-day event at Palouse Ridge.
Each team played six players with the five best scores being counted.
The Cardinal made it a clean sweep as junior Maverick McNealy completed a wire-to-wire individual victory, setting a course record for good measure on Wednesday.
McNealy fired a 9-under 61 to easily win medalist honors. He had rounds of 65-68-68-61 for an 18-under 262, setting a conference record. Aaron Wise of Oregon finished second, 10 shots behind McNealy. Wise toured the 7,257-yard par 70 course superbly over the 72 holes, shooting 65-70-70-67 – 272.
Pre-tournament favorite Arizona State faltered during the final round, soaring to a 364 score to finish third.
Southern Cal and Washington, who finished fourth and fifth, respectively, are among the Pac-12 teams expected to receive invitations for the NCAA Regionals.
Tournament host Washington State, which was in third place after the first two rounds, continued its downward direction on Wednesday, falling into 10th place after posting a 377 score.
