Faldo receives Payne Stewart Award

ATLANTA – In an emotional ceremony, PGA Tour commissioner Tim Finchem named Nick Faldo this year’s recipient of the Payne Stewart Award.

Faldo was unable to attend Tuesday night’s ceremony at East Lake because he was in England to be with his father, George Arthur, who died about an hour before the award presentation. The elder Faldo was 88.

In a taped interview that was aired during the ceremony an emotional Faldo said of his father, “he’s playing the 18th hole of life.” Faldo’s son, Matthew, accepted the award for his father.

The Payne Stewart Award is presented each year to a player who exemplifies Stewart’s values of character, charity and sportsmanship. Finchem specifically applauded the six-time major champion’s work as an on-air analyst for Golf Channel and CBS Sports as well as his work to create the Faldo Junior Series, which began in 1996 and has helped developed some of the game’s top players, including Rory McIlroy and Yani Tseng.

“This award means a tremendous amount to me. The Faldo Series, we’re 18 years in to our series now and what I would call pay forward, pay back golf,” Faldo said. “What we’ve done I’m very proud of globally with this series.”
